Apply to National Grid:

Overview

Be the heart of energy

About us

We’re National Grid: we bring power to people. From heating up homes to keeping the lights on in hospitals, the energy we deliver makes the everyday possible. Now, you can help us, as we shape the future of millions and build the hi-tech networks of tomorrow.

We don’t generate or sell energy: instead, we join the dots that take it from A to B. At the backbone of industry and the heart of daily life, we take this vital force where it’s needed most.  As a Graduate, you’ll join us as we tackle increasingly complex – and important – challenges, with real responsibility, comprehensive training and the power to change things, from day one.

Our opportunities

We offer a range of exciting, impactful programmes and placements for both Graduates and Undergraduates. Each gives you the opportunity to explore your interests, test your skills and discover what a career in our evolving industry can offer. Bringing power to the UK as a whole, the work we do is unique and unparalleled in scope: here, you’ll take on responsibilities you just won’t find anywhere else.

Undergraduates

At Undergraduate level, we offer a 12-week Summer Internship or a 12-month Industrial Placement. Both will provide you with in-depth, on-the-job experience, working at the forefront of our far-reaching business. That could include anything from assisting with the development of new network designs to supporting high-profile construction projects.

Graduates

We currently run an 18-month Graduate Programme, as well as a 3-year Finance Graduate Programme. Each is made up of three advanced placements, where you’ll tackle issues that will define the future of our network. As well as Finance, that could mean specialising in Engineering & Technical, Non-Technical & Commercial or Business Support.

What we’re looking for

Each role at National Grid requires specific skills – and we look for people who can contribute their own ideas and way of thinking. However, there are some qualities that tie us together. The world of energy is constantly evolving: we need people with the spark, adaptability and drive to keep people connected. If you’re passionate about the future of our industry – and excited by the prospect of changing it – then you could be right for National Grid.

Graduate Jobs

Our 18 month graduate programme is made up of three, six month placements (with the exception of the Finance Graduate programme which is three years long consisting of three, 12 month placements) and is a fantastic way to kick off your career. You’ll put the skills you’ve already developed to good use and build on a whole host of new ones as you experience comprehensive training modules in a supportive, welcoming environment.

Finding the right people to join the Graduate Development Programme is no easy task. We need candidates who possess the perfect mix of a positive attitude, an innate willingness to learn and a hunger for success.

As a graduate with us, you’ll be supported by our ambitious growth strategy which includes a comprehensive training and development plan. But it’s not as simple as telling you what we want you to hear – you need to demonstrate to us that you’re able to put all this knowledge to use effectively and successfully. You’ll play an active part in our business and demonstrate your ambition every single day.

Internships & Placements

Put the unique skills you’ve developed at university to help us drive energy forwards. Undergraduates are the future of National Grid – and our Undergraduate Development Programme offers an insight into the role you can play here, and the future we can offer you.

An internship in Engineering & Technical means playing a pivotal role in keeping energy flowing around the UK. Fresh ideas, enthusiasm and technical knowledge are what we’re searching for in the people tasked with keeping the lights on. If you’re an Engineering or STEM undergraduate this could be the perfect step to achieving your career ambitions.

Whether joining us as part of Finance, Procurement or IT, you’ll be playing a vital role in keeping National Grid moving. Although not directly involved with the transmission of energy, your input will ensure we’re equipped and prepared for any eventuality. Your enthusiasm will safeguard our business for the future.

An undergraduate placement in Business Support means ensuring everyone at National Grid has everything they need to get the job done effectively and efficiently, time and again.
