Think you’d rock in a business management role? There are around 200 business management course options on offer at institutions based in the UK to choose from to help you on your way!

This type of undergraduate course will help you get to grips with the foundations of various business areas, and develop your knowledge and skills right up to be able to take on complex strategic concepts and techniques to apply in a business role when you graduate.

What will I study on a business management degree?

A business management degree will typically cover these areas:

  • Marketing principles
  • Business strategy
  • Business operations
  • Ethics in business
  • Business research methodologies
  • Sustainability
  • Leadership theory and skills
  • Strategic management
  • Financial management.

Expect plenty of theories, case studies and development of commercial awareness on this degree. Quite a few courses also include internships or work placements as one or more of your optional, or even compulsory modules. A sandwich year/placement year option is also popular to help you gain really useful workplace experience as part of your degree. You may also have to undertake extensive independent projects as part of your assessment.

Business management courses take on many different focuses in the UK. It can be combined with leadership, or have a focus on international business, accounting or marketing, or with a foreign language.

Degrees in this discipline typically last either three or four years. BPP University offers a couple of accelerated business management courses which will take two years to complete instead of three or four: one in business management and one in business management with finance.

Entry requirements…

A-levels BBB or higher (or equivalent qualifications) are usually the requirement for this course, but some universities will be more flexible and accept C grades.

There will nearly always be an English language proficiency minimum test score for international students too. Check out your prospective universities’ entry requirements for further information.

Where could a business management degree take me?

These degrees are designed to set you up for a business management role. No surprises there; though don’t expect to walk straight into a board position hot off the graduation podium! You’ll still have to earn your stripes in more junior roles before working your way up to the top management positions. Still, you’ll certainly be on the right track with a qualification such as this! The strategic and leadership skills you will learn about are highly valued by employers in the business and finance industry – particularly if you’ve started to put them into practice on internships or a placement year.

Typical industries for business management graduates…

There’s plenty to move into in finance with a business management degree. Take a look at:

  • Branch management in retail banking
  • Insurance
  • Human resources
  • Consulting
  • Financial planning and advice
  • Private banking
  • Accounting.
